"Greece, change thy lords!" - Lord Byron, with his classical education plus enchanted by the beauty of Greece, its ancient monuments and its culture, writes verses and glorifies it. He attacks his compatriot Elgin, for looting the leading monument of antiquity, the Acropolis. He falls in love with a Greek girl, Teresa Makri, and writes the poem "Maid of Athens, ere we part " full of passion for her. He mixes with French, Germans, Turks and speaks fervently about the freedom of Greece and freedom around the world. He dreams of the Greek uprising, about which he later writes the poetic masterpiece "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage". In 1821, when the Greeks revolted once more claiming independence, he took up arms and actively participated in the struggle.
